Heroine Bust Worries Local Police

McALLEN - A heroine bust has some authorities wondering about the growing footprint of Mexican drug cartels in the region.

McAllen police on Monday confiscated 47 pounds of pure heroine and 116 pounds of cocaine from a gated community in the south side of the city. The drugs have a street value of $3 million, officials said.

Police said the well-orchestrated operation likely was organized by a Mexican cartel. Each package was labeled with the image of a super hero; police said that is a significant clue.

"You have here about five different super heroes, so to speak, as labels on these bundles. That indicates to us, these were going to five different destination points," McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the bust will have an impact in the rest of the nation.

"That took heroin off the streets for literally thousands of people in our inner-most cities in our country," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the case is alarming.

"We believe there's an obvious Mexico connection here. You cannot engage in this kind of traffic without having an organization behind you," Rodriguez said.

The possible cartel connection raises concerns, he said.

People who live near the house where the bust happened are concerned about the encroaching cartels.

Police arrested Jose Rolando Ocampo, 20, in connection with the bust. Ocampo lived at the property, but he isn't the owner, officials said.

Police got consent from Ocampo to search the town home after a traffic stop. The Mexican national had been deported before, officials said.

"If this is happening with enhanced amounts of security, then you can only imagine how much worse it would be if we didn't have those resources along the border," Rodriguez said.

McAllen police seized 18,000 pounds of drugs during the past six weeks.
